West Midlands Man Confronted by Bailiffs After Changing Energy Meters

A West Midlands resident faced bailiffs, police, and energy company officials at his door after changing his electricity meters based on misleading advice.

The incident began when the man’s 19-year-old daughter reported strangers attempting to enter their home. Officials were there with a warrant of entry, inspecting newly altered meters the man had installed himself, believing he was within his rights.

While property owners do have certain rights, energy companies can legally disconnect supply from the street. Reconnection often requires a new contract, fees, and repayment of alleged arrears.

The man has been advised to negotiate with the supplier — potentially agreeing to a safety inspection or, if necessary, the installation of analog meters instead of smart ones. However, the outcome is uncertain.

“This happens all the time,” said a source. “People get bad advice. If you want to fight smart meters, don’t change your equipment — change your contract.”
