Energy debt – Renters
Energy Company Threatening Action β Important Info for Renters
Someone recently received a notice from their energy provider about an outstanding balance of Β£3,323.29, with no Direct Debit set up. The company said they had involved a collections agency and threatened possible actions such as switching the account to Smart Pay As You Go (PAYG) or applying for a warrant of entry to change the meter.
The person clarified that the property is a rental and does not have smart meters installed.
Key advice from others:
π In a rented property without smart meters, the provider cannot remotely switch you to PAYG.
π They also cannot obtain a warrant of entry for debt alone β only for issues related to health and safety.
π The wording of such notices is often designed to create fear and pressure you into quick payment or action.
